The South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim died last month at the age of 91. He had a long and eventful career, and his best-known piece, known variously as “Mannenberg” or “Capetown Fringe,” was played at the inauguration of Mayor Mamdani earlier this year. But Ibrahim, or Dollar Brand as he was originally known, was no one-hit wonder. Nelson Mandela called him “our Mozart.” Ibrahim’s last visit to our studio was in 2019, when he played several works.
