Jake Silverman makes music under the name Button Masher, and the music he makes is a mashup of jazz with the electronic music style known as chiptune. That’s a deliberately lo-fi, retro sound built around the bleeps and twitters of old video games and the like; Button Masher creates a safe place for those vintage electronics to play nicely with the sounds of the fusion jazz that was popular around the same time. It’s fun, but it’s also serious: Button Masher won a Grammy for Best Arrangement: Instrumental or A Cappella, in 2021. He plays tonight, on September 8th, at the Blue Note.
