Christopher Janney creates sonic art; for over 30 years his piece called Reach has been installed at the 34th Street stop on the N and R subway lines, where subway riders can change the sound by reaching up and interrupting its light sensors. Outside New York, his most famous piece is probably Heartbeat, written for an ensemble of jazz and Indian musicians who improvise to a live dancer’s heartbeat. Mikhail Baryshnikov toured the piece back in the 90s; now the Indian dancer Mayuri Bhandari provides Heartbeat’s heartbeat.
