In the 1990s, the musical movement known as Asia Massive brought the sounds of South Asia to international audiences.Here in New York, DJ Rekha began their Basement Bhangra dance parties in 1997. Over the next two decades, Basement Bhangra became an inclusive – and often quite sweaty – feature on the music scene, outgrowing its early venues to take over places like Celebrate Brooklyn and Central Park Summerstage. Now, Rekha is bringing a new show called Basement Bhangra Beyond to Flushing Meadows Park on July 18.
