Brooklyn-based singer and guitarist Mei Semones has already rewritten the rules for a “guitar hero” – rather than lightning fast shredding, she builds her songs around an idiosyncratic blend of jazz, bossa nova, and art rock. Her mix of musical languages is echoed by her bilingual lyrics, which move seamlessly between English and Japanese. On her new single, called “Howl,” Semones bends the usual choral/verse/chorus format into a head-spinning spray of oddly-shaped chords, jazzy riffs, and almost classical lyricism on her acoustic guitar. Mei Semones plays a free show on Oct. 15 at Lincoln Center’s Rubinstein Atrium.
