If you didn’t know anything about Samara Joy and someone played you one of her records, you might assume she came from that great mid-century generation of jazz singers – you know, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn. But Samara Joy is a 26-year old singer from the Bronx who released her debut album in 2021 and started winning Grammy awards almost immediately. She’s now a sought-after collaborator and songwriter, and on Sept. 2, she’ll team up with celebrated bassist Christian McBride to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the jazz label Verve Records at Central Park SummerStage.
