For more than 20 years now, Jonathan Meiburg has led the band Shearwater. They’re named for a seagoing bird – because in addition to being a singer and songwriter, Meiburg is also an ornithologist and the author of the extraordinary book called A Most Remarkable Creature : The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey. Shearwater’s new album, The New World, is an expansive, cinematic record where the natural world and the musical world seem to meet. Meiburg plays a solo set on Thursday, Sept. 17, at Rough Trade Below, and the full band’s live set, featuring a guest appearance by Laurie Anderson, is the latest episode of Soundcheck, our twice-weekly podcast.
