Somi is a singer, an actor, and a playwright. As the American daughter of immigrant parents from East Africa, she has created a personal sound that mixes Western jazz and R&B with Afrobeat and West African highlife, among other styles. She’s referred to that sound as “New African Soul.” She also wrote and starred in the Off-Broadway musical Dreaming Zenzile, a tribute to the South African singer Miriam Makeba. Somi’s latest album is called What Does It Take To Bloom, and she plays Thursday, Oct.1, at Sony Hall, and does a live set on the latest episode of the Soundcheck Podcast.
