Tyondai Braxton is a composer whose work spans solo electronics and big orchestral music. His latest album, Splayed Werks, grows out of his live shows which are based on modular synthesis. So instead of playing a keyboard that comes with pre-programmed sounds, Braxton routes his music through a series of modules linked together with patch cords, allowing him to create and shape his own sounds. They can sometimes sound pretty abstract, but Braxton often uses a dance beat to make the music more grounded, like in the piece called “UnFS.” Tyondai Braxton plays on Sept. 16 at Public Records.
